End-of-the-world priest accused of stealing from followers

A Catholic priest who told believers the end of the world was nigh has been accused of stealing their belongings.

Police have charged Fr Fernando Vallejo with stealing property and money, as well as organising a mass trespass.

He's accused of leading around 200 people on to a farm near Florencia, Colombia, in mid-July and telling them to wait there for the end of the world Newspaper El Tiempo reports they had all given their worldly goods to Father Vallejo who allegedly told them property was an obstacle to salvation.

The case came to light after police tried to expel the believers from the farm. Around 30 people later claimed the priest had fooled them.

Vallejo faces a number charges including fraud, kidnapping, making threats to obtain money and offences against public hygiene.
