Nun murdered in Ireland sex attack
Police in the Irish Republic have launched a murder inquiry after a nun was strangled and sexually assaulted in County Monaghan.
65 year old Sister Philomena Lyons was found dead in the grounds of a convent on Saturday. It is understood she had set off from St Joseph's convent in Ballybay to catch a bus to Dublin. When she failed to arrive a search was carried out. Her body was found later on Saturday night.
A post mortem examination revealed she died from strangulation and had been sexually assaulted.
Sister Lyons was a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart order. She had been teaching in Ballybay since 1964.
Superintendent Tom Long confirmed that a murder investigation is underway and said house to house inquires were continuing and a search of the area ongoing.
