Indonesian bishop calls for UN intervention to curb violence
The bishop of Manado in eastern Indonesia has called for UN intervention to prevent a potential genocide against Christians.
Some 10,000 Christians were displaced after Islamic fundamentalists attacked their villages in Poso last week.
The international community must watch "the barbarous acts toward genocide in Poso District in Central Sulawesi," said Bishop Joseph Suwatan of Manado.
The Indonesian government must provide emergency help for security, and the United Nations must intervene immediately to safeguard thousands of Christians in Poso, said Bishop Suwatan, whose diocese serves North and Central Sulawesi.
