Pope stays in Rome for Christmas

In a break from his usual pattern, Pope John Paul II has remained at the Vatican rather than spending a few days to relax after Christmas at his summer residence in Castelgandolfo.

The Holy Father greeted pilgrims in St. Peter's Square on 26 December, leading them in the recitation of the Angelus.

He remarked that St Stephen - whose feast was being celebrated on that day - "reminds us that the child Jesus, from the cave in Bethlehem, invites us to follow him step by step, even to the Cross."
