Cardinal says bin Laden could have been great leader

Osama bin Laden could have been a great leader but he "threw it all away," Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington said on Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press".

The cardinal, first lady Laura Bush and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani were featured guests as the pre-Christmas program focused on questions of American faith and spirit after the 11 September terrorist attacks.

When asked for his thoughts about the world's most notorious terrorist, Cardinal McCarrick said, "Osama bin Laden is obviously an extraordinary, talented, charismatic person, and when I think of him I say, 'My God, what good he could have done. What a great leader he could have been. What a wonderful gift he could have been to humanity.' And he threw it all away.
