Monks make it to prayers on time with fireman's pole

A monastery in Austria has installed a firemen's pole from its sleeping quarters to the ground floor to ensure that monks get to their prayers on time.

Fr Superior Fritz Wenigwieser came up with the idea after renovation work at his monastery left little space for a staircase from the monksą rooms on the second floor to the groundfloor chapel.

He spent $A89 on a pole at a local shop and visited the fire brigade in Linz to get advice on its installation.
