Brisbane Catholic school praised for quick action in meningococcal case
Health authorities have praised the quick action of school officials at St Mary's College, Ipswich, in recognising the symptoms of the potentially deadly meningococcal disease in a student.
Dr Brad McCall from Queensland Health said the student has responded well to treatment for the disease after being admitted to hospital earlier last week.
He said a number of other students have also been given preventive medication.
"Meningococcal disease occurs throughout the year it obviously occurs in greater numbers during the winter season, like winter and early spring and we do get cases across all age groups sporadically from time to time throughout the year," he said.
"This is one of those cases and the standard preventive measures have been put in place and in this case it does not include vaccination."
