Pope to beatify two communist era martyrs from Slovakia on Sunday
This Sunday's beatification of two communist-era martyrs from Slovakia will show the "unity of Eastern Catholics with Rome," said a Slovakian church spokesman.
Pope John Paul II will beatify the two martyrs from Slovakia's Eastern Catholic Church at a Mass at the Vatican.
"Their beatification will be a very great event not only for Eastern Catholics, but for the whole church here," said Father Marek Pribola, a spokesman for Slovakia's Presov Diocese.
The martyrs, Bishop Pavol Gojdic, 1888-1960, and Czech-born Father Metodej Trcka, 1886-1959, died ill and neglected at Czechoslovakia's Leopoldov prison after being jailed for alleged crimes against the communist state.
