Cardinal Cassidy says authority the stumbling block for ecumenism
Retired Australian Cardinal Edward Cassidy told a Melbourne audience earlier this month that the question of authority lies at the heart of work towards church unity.
The former President of the Vatican's Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity was the keynote speaker at the 13th National Meeting of Diocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Commissions.
"History illustrates very well just how much the question of authority was an essential element in the divisions that occurred among Christians," Cardinal Cassidy said.
"Other fundamental causes of continued division - ministry, ordination, the Eucharist and the interpretation of doctrine in particular - call into discussion questions about where authority lies in the understanding of the Church and who has responsibility of coming to decisions that bind Christians."
