Quebec bishop urges companies to recall social debt to workers

In the face of announced job cuts and fears about the fate of the North American economy, the president of the Quebec bishops' assembly urged companies to remember their 'social debt'.

Bishop Raymond Saint-Gelais of Nicolet, newly elected president of the Quebec bishops' assembly, said companies that have profited from public subsidies should repay some of the social debt they have contracted, and should avoid profiting from the situation to the detriment of workers.

"We call for real solidarity that may be expressed by gestures of mutual assistance," he said.
