Installation of new Archbishop of Singapore

12,000 people packed Singapore's Indoor Stadium on Sunday to witness the installation of 63 year old Archbishop Nicholas Chia.

"It is a significant milestone for the Catholic Church in Singapore, as Fr Chia is the first local-born bishop to be appointed to this office," said Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. "Over the years, the Catholic Church has helped to nurture inter-religious harmony in our multi-racial and multi-religious society. I am confident that it will continue to do so under the leadership of Fr Chia."

Affectionately known as 'Papa Chia' to his parishioners, the new Archbishop laced his short address with traces of humour, likening himself to the donkey bearing Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

There are 300,000 Catholics in Singapore, including 125 priests and 300 religious brothers and sisters. The Church runs 34 schools, one junior college, a hospital and several welfare organisations, which cater to people of all races and religions.
