New York cardinal says US should search soul
New York's Cardinal Edward Egan said on Monday that, after last month's attacksm the United States should search its soul about whether its role in some parts of the world could have created a climate of hate.
"We have to examine our consciences, which is one of the things you do in the pursuit of holiness," said the Cardinal in response to a question at a news conference.
"You say: 'What have I been doing wrong?' even in times when there's not a tragedy, but how do we account for what has happened?" he said at the Vatican, where he is attending the synod of bishops.
"Now, the explanation is not necessarily that there have been misdeeds on the part of the United States, but that is a possibility," he said, speaking after the 11 September attacks by suicide hijackers in New York and Washington.
