Use of force against terrorism justifiable, say theologians
A military response to last Tuesday's attacks that destroyed the World Trade Centre in New York City is justifiable once responsibility for the act is determined with moral certitude, according to leading US moral theologians.
Fr J. Bryan Hehir, the new head of Catholic Charities USA and chairman of the executive committee at Harvard Divinity School, said the use of force could be applied under certain restrictive conditions.
"First, you have to be certain who caused this, where they are, what kind of effective action can be taken and whether that action can be taken without causing harm to civilian society," he said. "But to say that it's permissible to use force is not to say that it's inevitable that this is the way to address the problem," he added.
