Missionary kidnapped in Colombia

A Divine Word missionary from Slovakia was abducted on Sunday by the ELN (National Liberation Army), Colombia's second most prominent guerrilla group.

Fr Pavol Sochulák was captured while travelling by public bus between Medellín and the capital Bogotá. A group of men of the ELN stopped the bus and also abducted other passengers, whose identities are still unknown.

The Colombian Bishops Conference has set up a special commission to negotiate with the abductors. The Justice and Peace Commission of the Conference of Religious of Colombia and the Spanish NGO Para el Tercer Mundo are also helping with the case. The Commission has already been able to establish contact with the ELN for the liberation of the hostages.

33 year old Fr Sochulák arrived in Colombia shortly after his ordination two years ago. He was assigned to the Divine Word community and parish in Vigía del Fuerte, in the Chocó region.
