UK bishops' newsletter calls Vatican rules 'totalitarian'
A newsletter distributed by the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales has attacked a controversial Vatican document on the liturgy.
The Liturgy Newsletter, which is prepared for and distributed by the bishops' conference, described the Vatican Instruction Liturgiam authenticam ("The Authentic Liturgy"), as "authoritarian" and "totalitarian" in tone.
The document, written by the Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship, was approved by the Pope in March.
The leading article of this month's Liturgy Newsletter, written by editor Canon Chris Walsh, described the document as "mean-spirited" and "profoundly untraditional".
