Call to scrap new detention centre plans
A church worker with refugees has called for the abandonment of plans for a new 200 bed detention centre near Brisbane to house illegal immigrants facing deportation.
The Director of Brisbane Archdiocese's Centre for Multicultural Pastoral Care, Josť Zepeda said the Federal Government's intentions must be questioned.
Mr Zepeda told The Catholic Leader that if asylum seekers cleared of criminal connections were allowed out into the community, this would create places in existing detention centres for compliance cases.
"The Government is proposing to spend a lot of the taxpayers' money," he said. "We don't believe it's necessary. Such a centre could well be meant to hold refugees too."
