New bush bishop for ordination this week
Holy Family Church, Parkes will be filled to capacity for the Episcopal Ordination of the Fr Christopher Toohey as the sixth Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes at 11.30am on Thursday.
Bishop Toohey, 49, succeeds Bishop Barry Collins who died last November. He has been a priest of the
Archdiocese of Sydney since his ordination in 1982. He worked as assistant priest in various parishes before being appointed Director of the Archdiocese's Catholic Adult Education Centre in 1995.
Sydney's Archbishop George Pell, assisted by the city's Emeritus Archbishop, Cardinal Edward Clancy, and Bishop Doug Warren, Emeritus Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes, will ordain Bishop Toohey. Archbishop Canalini, Apostolic Nuncio in Australia, Cardinal Cassidy, recently retired from Rome, and 24 bishops from around Australia will be present for the ceremony.
Also in attendance will be two Anglican bishops, Bishop Hurford from Bathurst and Bishop Clarke from Riverina, State MP for Dubbo, Mr Tony McGrain and Mayor of Parkes, Mr Robert Wilson, members of Bishop Toohey's family and his close friends, as well as representatives of every parish in the Diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes as well as many priests and colleagues from Sydney. Approximately 100 priests will concelebrate.
Prior to the Ordination, the Presbyterian and the Catholic ladies will together provide morning tea for early arrivals. A light luncheon will follow at the Parkes Leagues Club.
