German theologian advises against restoring diaconate for women
The church should not restore the ancient church ministry of deaconesses because modern proponents of women deacons would not be satisfied and Catholics in the pews would be confused, a German theologian said in a Vatican publication.
Fr Manfred Hauke, a professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Augsburg, said ambiguous phrases in the documents of the Second Vatican Council have contributed to the push for deaconesses in recent years, and ought to be clarified in a forthcoming Vatican document.
The theologian wrote a lengthy article on deaconesses that was published in late July in the bulletin of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.
