Dominican Order chooses Argentinian Master General
Delegates from 102 countries gathered in Providence Rhode Island for the General Chapter of the Dominicans have elected an Argentinian as their new leader.
44 year old Fr Carlos Azpiroz is the 86th Master in the order's 800 year history and only the second non-European to hold the office. He is a specialist in canon law and will serve as Master General for a nine-year term. He succeeds Fr Timothy Radcliffe of the UK.
Fr Azpiroz was elected on Saturday by 127 delegates representing over 6000 members of the Dominican Order worldwide.
The delegates are continuing to reflect on their mission at Providence College until their General Chapter ends on 8 August.
The General Chapter has its own website.
