Cardinal Cassidy says papal primacy next step in Orthodox dialogue

Further progress in the dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox churches will stall unless the problematic issue of papal primacy is discussed, said a retired Vatican official.

The Catholic Church has "gone as far as it could" without reopening a discussion of the Pope's unifying role, said Cardinal Edward Cassidy, retired president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews.

The 77-year-old Australian was speaking at a conference on Orthodox Christianity in Contemporary Europe at Leeds University in England.
