New bishop for Wilcannia-Forbes

Sydney Priest Fr Chris Toohey was last night named sixth Bishop of the NSW rural
diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes.

Fr Toohey, 49, has been a priest of the
Archdiocese of Sydney since his ordination in 1982. He worked as assistant priest in various parishes before being appointed Director of the Archdiocese's Catholic Adult Education Centre in 1995.

Before entering the seminary, Chris Toohey worked on the Sydney waterfront for almost eight years in a shipping agency.

The Diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes has been vacant since November 2001 when Bishop Barry Collins passed away.

Fr Kevin Murphy, Diocesan Administrator, said: "We are delighted that Fr Toohey has been appointed the Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes. We are looking forward to meeting him, and I'm sure the priests, religious and laity of the diocese will give him a very big welcome."

Fr Toohey was born in the inner city harbourside suburb of Balmain. He was educated by the Christian Brothers before entering St Columba's Seminary at Springwood in 1976. He completed a Licentiate in Theology, specialising in Fundamental Theology, at the Gregorian University, Rome (1990-1992).
