New bishop appointed for Bunbury Diocese
Pope John Paul II has appointed 53 year old Fr Gerard Holohan of the Archdiocese of Perth to succeed Bishop Peter Quinn, who retired last December.
The appointment was announced in Canberra last night by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Francesco Canalini.
Fr Holohan was ordained in 1971, and until now has held the office of Episcopal Vicar for Faith Education in the Archdiocese of Perth. He has also been Director of Religious Education for the Archdiocese from 1981 to the present, and is currently Chairman of the Council of Priests in Perth. He is respected around Australia for his work in preparing Teacher Guidelines for Religious Education and has published a number of books on religious education.
Perth's Archbishop Barry Hickey said he is delighted with the choice of one of his most respected priests as the new Bishop of Bunbury.
