New bishop for Wollongong Diocese

The Vatican's Apostolic Nuncio in Australia, Archbishop Francesco Canalini, last night announced the appointment of Sydney auxiliary Bishop Peter Ingham as the new bishop of the Diocese of Wollongong.

60 year old Bishop Ingham will become the fourth Bishop of Wollongong. His replaces Archbishop Philip Wilson, who is in line to become Archbishop of Adelaide when Archbishop Leonard Faulkner retires later this year.

Bishop Ingham was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney in 1993. He is highly regarded for his approachability and warm pastoral care for his people and priests.

He has already established links with the Wollongong Diocese, most recently with the opening of Healing House at Picton, a special place for Aboriginal women to go for retreat.

Bishop Ingham is a Member of the Australian Bishops' Committees for Finance, Liturgy and Ecumenical and Inter-Faith Relations, and an executive member of the National Council of Churches in Australia.
