SVDP preparing for winter's worst
The plight of the homeless is set to worsen with shelters bracing themselves for their busiest period during the coldest part of winter.
The manager of the St Vincent de Paul Society's Edel Quinn Shelter for men in Wagga Wagga, Peter Quarmby, told the ABC that winter means threatening conditions for the homeless and with the shelter already filled to capacity he has been forced to turn people away.
To address increasing numbers, Mr Quarmby says he is working to transport people to other shelters in Albury, Goulburn and Canberra.
"I think we're only the tip of the iceberg," he said.
"Obviously there is a lot of anecdotal evidence around to say that there are guys who are actually sleeping on the streets, down on the river and unfortunately with the capacity here already reached that situation is not going to improve."
