Australian bid for World Youth Day
An independent group of Sydney young people is pushing to hold World Youth Day in Australia in 2004.
A petition was launched by the group in May calling for permission to hold the 2004 event.
Sydney's Archbishop George Pell who is on a visit to Rome has taken the petition with him and is expected to submit it to authorities at the Vatican.
Director of Catholic Communications in Sydney, Marita Franklin, said while Archbishop Pell believed the timeframe was unrealistic for the 2004 event he was supportive of the concept.
She said: "The archbishop is certainly interested in bringing a World Youth Day to Australia."
Ms Franklin said the archbishop considered any proposal would need to be supported by the youth of Australia, the clergy, the bishops and the Government.
