Cardinal Clancy farewells St Mary's congregation
Hundreds of parishioners arrived at Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral yesterday for Cardinal Edward Clancy's final mass as Archbishop of Sydney.
Church leaders from around New South Wales gathered for the mass to mark Cardinal Clancy's retirement after 18 years as Archbishop of Sydney.
His homily dreew attention to the Church's role in evangelisation.
"The Church is often blamed for the fact that so many people around the world are not yet Christians after 2000 years," he said. "It is blamed too for the fact that many having become Christians at a later state abandon their Christian beliefs.
"The Church has a very solemn obligation to proclaim the word of God to preach the gospel."
A liturgy to welcome Archbishop-designate George Pell will be held at St Mary's on Thursday night.
