Bishops formalise Women's Commission
Members of the Commission for Australian Catholic Women, and their new Executive Officer, Therese Vassarotti, will be formally commissioned by Bishop Peter Connors at a special ceremony to be held in the Crypt of St Mary's Cathedral next month.
Bishop Connors is the representative of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference currently sitting on the Commission for Australian Catholic Women and also holds the office of Chairman of the Bishops' Committee for the Laity.
"This prayer service, which will be open to everyone, has a threefold purpose," said the Chairperson of the Commission for ACW, Mrs Geraldine Hawkes. "Firstly, it will be a public and formal authorisation by the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference for the Commission to facilitate the implementation of the initiatives of the Social Justice Statement 2000."
"Secondly, it will provide members with the opportunity to make together a formal commitment to the task that has been asked of them, and thirdly, it offers an invitation to the wider community to pray for members and for the work of the Commission," said Mrs Hawkes.
"We see this as a small but significant step in enabling the members of the Catholic Church in Australia to move forward together in prayerful unity with regard to the gifts, experience and skills women have to offer the Church," said Commission Chairperson, Mrs Geraldine Hawkes.
There is a general public invitation to the ceremony, which is to be held at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, at 5:00 pm on Friday 15 June.
