Ethicist says Catholic Social Teaching requires US action on climate change
Basic common morality, as well as Catholic Social Teaching, dictates that the United States make sacrifices for the sake of battling global climate change, a Jesuit social ethicist told a Washington conference.
"Morality itself demands the United States make some conscious sacrifice for the sake of the planetary common good," said Fr Drew Christiansen, senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Centre. Fr Christiansen was speaking on Tuesday at a conference on Global Climate Change sponsored by the Pew Centre on Global Climate Change.
"Moral integrity requires that the United States accept responsibility for its enormous role in contributing to global warming," Fr Christiansen said. "It is as simple as this: Adults take out their own garbage."
