Brisbane priests urge Good Friday sport boycott
The erosion of Good Friday and other holidays has sparked an outcry from the Council of Priests in Brisbane Archdiocese.
The Catholic Leader reports that Fr Frank O'Dea has instigated a statement by the council which was sent to all parishes last weekend, urging a boycott of foorball and other sports matches played on the day.
It criticised, in particular, the National Rugby League for scheduling a match between the Brisbane Broncos and the Sydney City Roosters on Good Friday.
"Good Friday is a religious holiday - probably the most significant religious holiday still experienced in Australia. We feel it would be an enormous shame for it to be eroded back to just an ordinary holiday," the statement said.
