Marlon Brando likely to play the 'good pope'
Acting legend Marlon Brando has been approached to play the part of Pope John XXIII in a new movie.
Italian state TV channel RAI wants the Hollywood great to take the role of the pope who presided over Vatican II.
"We approached Mr Brando because he was considered as the ideal candidate for the role. Facially, there are some resemblances between the two," a RAI spokeswoman told the London Daily Mirror. "He seemed very interested in the part."
A source close to the star of The Godfather, On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire confirmed that Brando has been offered the role.
The role of Pope John XXIII would be a big departure for Brando, who is known for his tough-guy roles. The film will start production this year.
