Sydney seminary intake 'best for 15 years'
The Rector of the Good Shepherd diocesan seminary in Sydney, Fr Michael Foster, has described this year's intake as 'the best for 15 years'.
"This is the strongest enrolment we have seen since the early 1980s, when Manly and Springwood were still operating," Fr Foster told The Catholic Weekly.
The class of 2001 consists of 13 men drawn from Sydney and regional NSW. The new seminarians will devote the next five years to their formation as priests. On completion of their theological studies, they will undertake pastoral work for a year before being ordained to the priesthood.
Fr Foster said the Homebush seminary, which opened in 1996, presently retains about 70% of those who enter. Its first class of graduates will leave later this year.
