Artwork featuring papal meeting with meteorite set for auction
A life-size waxwork of Pope John Paul II being struck down by a meteorite, part of last year's Apocalypse exhibition at the British Royal Academy, is set to fetch up to $A1.2 million at auction.
The artwork - La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour) - was produced in 1999 by controversial Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. It depicts the Pope lying on a red carpet with a rock embedded in his side. Broken glass from where the meteorite has crashed through the roof lies on the floor but there are no signs of physical damage.
The work is being offered for sale by a private French source at Christie's in New York on 17 May.
