Kenyan archbishop defends women against President's slur
The head of the Catholic Church in Kenya, Archbishop Ndingi Mwana Nzeki, has spoken in defence of women following the comment from President Daniel Arap Moi that women are hindered from making progress because they have small brains.
Opening a regional women's seminar in Nairobi last week, the President said: "You [women] can achieve more, can get more but because of your little minds, you cannot get what you are expected to get!"
Archbishop Nzeki joined a chorus of outrage among leaders in Kenyan society, insisting that women have 'equal intelligence and ability'.
President Moi's "little minds" comment is just the latest in a series of indiscretions. Commentators have suggested that he occasionally casts aside a prepared text in order to make off-the-cuff remarks that inevitably gain him the publicity he is desperately seeking.
