Italian anti-mafia priest's beatification process making good progress
The beatification process of Fr Pino Puglisi, a Sicilian anti-Mafia priest, who was murdered in 1993, is progressing well, according to Church officials in Palermo.
Although the first part of his beatification process has now been completed, it remains unclear whether Fr Puglisi should just be beatified for his charitable work in the crime-ridden Brancaccio neighbourhood of Palermo, or whether he should also be recognised as a martyr for the Catholic faith.
This will be determined in the second part of the beatification process, according to spokespeople of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
