Australian cardinal retires from Vatican post
Cardinal Edward Iris Cassidy has retired from his position as President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
On Saturday, Pope John Paul II confirmed expectations that his replacement would be German Cardinal Walter Kasper. Cardinal Kasper, turned 68 yesterday, is a world-renowned theologian. He played an integral role in steps leading to the October 1999 signing of the Augsburg Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.
