Vatican censure of interreligious dialogue theologian 'won't harm Indian church'
Theologians and church officials in India have acted to calm fears that a "notification" the Vatican issued concerning Belgian Jesuit Father Jacques Dupuis' book on religious pluralism would affect the interreligious dialogue that is an essential part of the work of the Church in the country.
Fr Antony Suresh, secretary of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India's Commission for Ecumenism and Dialogue, issued the assurance last week.
Meanwhile Fr Lisbert D'Souza, Jesuit provincial of India, said that "the notification sounds harmless" and "applauds Father Dupuis' understanding of the Vatican position."
The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued the notification on Monday last week concerning Fr Dupuis' 1997 book, "Toward a Christian Theology of Religious Pluralism."
