Pope leads European reaction to El Salvador quake
Pope John Paul II has prayed for people hit by the devastating earthquake in Central America, and called on the international community to send aid.
"I want to express my spiritual closeness to the populations hit by the quake in that region which is very dear to my heart," the pope said at Sunday mass.
"While I pray to the Lord for the victims, I send warm words of encouragement to survivors, hoping that they will receive help from the international community," the pope told pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter's Square on Sunday.
More than 80 people are dead and hundreds missing in El Salvador and Guatemala.
