Death of Australia's first Ukrainian Catholic Bishop
The bishop who was the major force in the establishment of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Australia died on Sunday.
The current Eparch for the Ukrainian Church, Bishop Peter Stasiuk, yesterday announced the death of 86 year old Bishop Ivan Prasko.
Chairman of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, Stefan Romaniw, said: "the community has lost a great man, or incredible vision and foresight, a man of great leadership skills who envisioned the future and over the past 50 years forged together a strong community."
Bishop Peter Stasiuk said: "Bishop Ivan, while building the Church in Australia, was instrumental in supporting and keeping alive the Church in Ukraine. His personal support for the Church under sufferance under the Communist regime was a key in keeping the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church alive."
