Pope among Australia's Federation well-wishers
    Pope John Paul II prayed for Australia on the eve of this week's celebration of the Centenary of Federation.
    He was one of many world leaders to send congratulatory messages or otherwise remember Australia.
    Spanish President Jose Maria Lopez described the naming of Australia by Spanish navigator Pedro Fernandez de Quiros in 1606 as 'Austrialia of the Holy Spirit' and mentioned the role played by Spanish missionaries in opening up the region to European settlement.
