Catholic Council regrets 'dilution' of Govt Aboriginal Affairs portfolio
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council (NATSICC) Chairperson, Ms. Vicki Walker has congratulated Mr Philip Ruddock on his appointment as the new Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs.
But she also expressed concern that the Aboriginal Affairs portfolio would not have it's own minister.
"There are significant concerns with Mr Ruddock having the concurrent portfolios of Reconciliation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Immigration and Multicultural Affairs," Ms Walker said. "It is imperative that the unique sovereign position of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first owners of the land is not placed under the multicultural umbrella or otherwise diluted."
She expressed that fear that the Minister will not have adequate time to devote to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs given the large number and nature of his portfolios".
