Indian archbishop laments caste system
An archbishop has said that a society divided by a caste system hurts Christ.
"When we are divided on the basis of caste or other reasons, we wound Jesus Christ," according to Archbishop Michael Augustine of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, during the inauguration of the diocesan eucharistic congress held last week. "Only when we are united and work together with the Church is there meaning in celebrating the Eucharist."
The previous evening, Archbishop Augustine hoisted the eucharistic flag and concelebrated Mass at St. Xavier's Church in Uppalam. Hundreds of representatives from all the diocesan parishes attended the congress.
During his homily, the archbishop said: "Our greatness lies in service mixed with love. We have to extend help to create equality and eliminate poverty. We must fight to remove evil and establish righteousness."
