Queensland bishops to redevelop seminary facility
Queensland's bishops have outlined plans for a major redevelopment of the Pius XII Provincial Seminary site at Banyo.
The Catholic Leader reports that the redevelopment will involve the relocation of Australian Catholic University's McAuley campus to the Banyo site in 2003.
"For the past 61 years Banyo has been the site for the education and formatio of Queensland priests," the bishops wrote in a join pastoral letter to be read at Masses this weekend. "During this time 418 men have been ordained from Banyo, serving parishes in all parts of the state.
Three years ago the seminarians moved from Banyo to a house of formation at Wavell Heights, travelling to Banyo for classes. The bishops said the move was made because of the need for more appropriate living arrangements for the number of seminarians. Increased numbers this year saw the opening of a second house of formation on the same property.
They said in their letter that the model of seminary is "in accordance with Pope John Paul II's vision of seminarians living as part of, rather than apart from, the world, seminding more time being formed in parish settings rather than in an enclosed seminary."
