Holy See ready to deal with whoever wins White House
The Vatican said on Wednesday that it will cooperate with whoever comes to power in the United States, where the presidential election remains unresolved.
"The Church is dealing with all those in power," said Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano in reply to questions by journalists whether the Holy See preferred either of the two candidates, according to Agence France-Presse.
"Catholics vote according to their conscience; the freedom of choice also exists in the United States," he added.
The semiofficial Vatican paper L'Osservatore Romano carried a large headline, saying: "Only a few votes separate George Bush from Al Gore. Name of new president still uncertain."
