Ratzinger spokesman says indigenous theology is not Catholic
The Catholic Church cannot recognise an "Indian" or "indigenous" theology because of its "serious doctrinal inconsistencies", according to a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
The Tablet reports that Fr Adriano Garuti, visiting Mexico City on behalf of the CDF's head, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, said it was better to speak "not of an Indian or indigenous theology" but rather of "Indian wisdom".
Fr Garuti, who was addressing a study day on the themes of pastoral work among native Indians, inculturation and theology, said the CDF was "still looking" for a precise meaning of "indigenous theology".
Its advocates refused to adopt the classic methodology of theology; "therefore," said Fr Garuti, "one cannot speak of this as theology".
