Josephites rebuild pride in East Timorese music
The Mary Mackillop Institute of East Timorese Studies has brought an East Timorese choir to Australia to tour New South Walaes.
Performing yesterday at the Sydney Town Hall, a spokesman for the 23 voice Anin Murak choir told AAP that music was vital to East Timorese culture.
The Sisters of St Joseph who organised the tour hope that the music - which was once viewed with suspicion in East Timor - would ease the trauma these teenagers endured.
After an official welcome from Sydney Lord Mayor Frank Sartor, choir leader Paulo Periera led his singers through "Suru Boek" to thank Australia for its support.
"Before we got your invitation we feel that we (were) too small in this world," he said.
