Burden of Govt welfare policy failure straining SVDP
The St Vincent de Paul Society has said the Government's welfare policies are not working because of the number of government agencies referring clients to it for help.
The society's written to the Federal Government warning that it will not become an arm of its operations and expressing concern about clients who think they have a legal right to its services because of such referrals.
Spokesman Terry McCarthy said its resources are being stretched.
"We are not complaining about the workload, that is not our concern," he said. "We will help anyone who comes to us in genuine need as far as we can.
"But the current system is not working in that if government agencies find themselves with a situation where they have to refer people to charitable organisations for assistance, then the system is not working."
