Philippines    MANILA PRIESTS CALL FOR PRESIDENT ESTRADA'S RESIGNATION
The Presbyteral Council of Manila has called on Philippine President Joseph Estrada to step down from office following allegations that he received payoffs from illegal gambling operations.
In a pastoral statement released yesterday and titled 'On The Way of Truth', the council said it believes propriety and 'the good of the people' dictates that Estrada 'must relinquish his office'.
The council, which is headed by Cardinal Jaime Sin, issued the statement after its Wednesday meeting at Sin's residence. Some 50 of the 73 bishops and priests at the meeting wrote that the statement was their 'collective outcry' against 'all the scandals that have besmirched the image of the presidency in the last two years'.
