|CARITAS AUSTRALIA CALLS FOR MEKONG FLOOD RELIEF DONATIONS|
Caritas Australia is calling for urgent donations to help more than one million people affected by the worst floods along the Mekong Delta in nearly 40 years|
Caritas Australia is working through local partner Caritas Cambodia, which is coordinating the Church's response to the crisis. Emergency relief assistance includes rice rations, health services, blankets, boats, fishing nets, animal feed and mosquito nets.
Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos have been ravaged by the floods. Approximately 200,000 Cambodians have fled their homes to escape the floods that have killed several hundred people across South East Asia.
Heavy rains have battered Cambodia as well as the entire Mekong watershed area since early July. Because of this early rainfall, most of the crops had not been harvested. During the last week of August, a second heavy wave of rain and storms swept across Cambodia and the Mekong River watershed causing more serious flooding.
Media officer Stephanie Thomas says that although housing and infrastructure damage is still being assessed, long-term needs will include housing and infrastructure repair.
The telephone number for donations is 1800 024 413.
