India    HINDU GROUP WANTS LOCAL CATHOLIC CHURCH TO BREAK VATICAN ALLEGIANCE
A senior Catholic Church official has expressed surprise over a Hindu nationalist group's demand to expel foreign missioners from India and establish an independent national Church as in China.
Fr Donald D'Souza, deputy secretary general of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, told UCA News on Tuesday that the Hindu nationalists' demand has "surprised and hurt" the Church.
"This is an assault on democracy and all forms of decency," he said, describing the call as "a direct aggression on the minorities, and not just against Christians." The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS, national volunteer corps) made the demand on Sunday at an exclusive meeting of some 21,000 RSS volunteers.
