Women's groups prepare IVF challenge
Women's groups are preparing to challenge Australia's Catholic Bishops in the High Court over in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The bishops are fighting a Federal Court decision to give single women and lesbians access in Victoria to IVF services.
Lisa Solomen from the Women's Electoral Lobby said that her organisation will defend any attempt to place the rights of an unborn foetus ahead of the rights of a woman.
"Last time the Catholic Bishops intervened in a case which was in 1996 was an abortion case, they actually turned it around and intervened in such a way that they made the nature of the case change to focus on the rights of the unborn foetus," she said. "And we are suspicious that this may be their intent again."
